A Worthy Marriage (Colossians 3:17-19)

Sermon Summary: Colossians 3:17–20 calls believers to display genuine sanctification where it is most tested—at home—so that our marriages and families show the “new self” marked by compassion, humility, patience, and love. Using the “watched life” idea from The Truman Show, the sermon asks what would be revealed if our daily routines were on display, and then points to Jesus’ warning in Matthew 7:24–27 that the only sure foundation for a worthy marriage is hearing Christ’s words and doing them. Paul’s flow in Colossians 3:16–17 leads into the home: saturate life with the word of Christ, live all of life in Jesus’ name, and therefore apply the gospel in the family through God-given roles—wives submitting voluntarily, husbands loving sacrificially, and children obeying. Marriage is presented as God’s original design (Genesis 2) meant to reflect the relationships within the Trinity, never as a pretext for domination or abuse, but as distinct roles with equal value under Christ’s lordship. The aim of this “worthy marriage” is the glory of God, a visible presentation of the gospel, and the joy that grows when Christ is Lord of our lives and homes.
