Killing Sin, Part 7 (Colossians 3:5)
This sermon argues that just as physical fitness requires strong motivation and disciplined effort, growth in Christlikeness requires a deep, heartfelt desire and unwavering commitment to kill sin rather than tolerate it. True holiness demands hatred of sin, constant vigilance, and active resistance, empowered not by personal strategies alone but by the work of the Holy Spirit through the gospel. The author emphasizes knowing oneself with humility, honesty, and disciplined action; knowing one’s environment and seasons of vulnerability; and, most importantly, knowing God—His perfections, holiness, and grace—which humbles us and leads to repentance. Ultimately, knowing the gospel means recognizing that God Himself is the gospel, that transformation comes from beholding His glory, and that victory over sin is accomplished only through faith in Christ and the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, who alone can weaken sin’s grip and form us into Christ’s likeness.
